Cannabis Uses for Skin Care

What is CBD?

Cannabidiol, or CBD, is one of many chemical compounds found in the cannabis plant. Alongside THC, its psychoactive counterpart, CBD has been used throughout history to help treat a variety of conditions. Research has shown that CBD may be effective in treating conditions ranging from chronic pain to insomnia, and in some cases rare forms of childhood epilepsy. Usually, manufacturers will extract CBD from the cannabis plant and mix it with a carrier oil which results in CBD oil. CBD oil can vary in strength, and it is utilized in numerous ways like directly on the skin, under the tongue, or in creams or lotions.

What are the applications of CBD in skincare?

There are many CBD skincare benefits due to CBD’s potential antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. CBD may be useful for treating an assortment of skin conditions.

Acne

CBD skincreams may be part of the solution for acne and acne related issues. Many CBD skincare products contain oil-reducing, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial properties that could help reduce acne.

So, how can CBD help prevent acne? Human sebocytes are the cells that create sebum, which is a waxy, oily substance the skin produces to help protect itself. However excessive sebum can also result in acne. Studies have shown that CBD for the skin may help prevent sebocytes from creating too much sebum due to the potential antibacterial and antifungal properties of the cannabis plant. This could help prevent acne due to infections on the skin. CBD skin creams may also help improve the appearance of acne scars.

Dryness and itching

The anti-inflammatory properties of CBD appear to be particularly helpful for reducing potential triggers of conditions such as eczema, dermatitis, and psoriasis. CBD oil can also soothe skin and reduce inflammation, improve dryness and help with itching.

Aging and wrinkles

In addition to its anti-inflammatory properties, CBD may also possess antioxidant properties. Oxidative stress, for example, contributes to the aging process, so the antioxidant properties of CBD skin cream may be able to delay the progression of skin aging.

Infection

CBD can also be useful in treating skin infections due to the antibacterial and antifungal elements that the cannabis sativa plant contains. It is important to check in with your doctor before applying a CBD cream, CBD oil, or any other topical treatment to an open wound.

How do I find the product that is right for me?

When shopping for CBD products, it is important to know the source of your extract. Some supplements will claim to use whole plant extracts, so be sure to check the label to verify that what you’re buying isn’t just using the buzzword ‘CBD’ on the label for marketing purposes.

It can be challenging to identify the best CBD skin care products (or other CBD products) among the many CBD skin care products available today. Here are some CBD shopping tips:

  1. Make sure the ingredient list states “cannabidiol”. Note that hemp seed oil or extract is not the same as CBD oil.
  2. CBD brands selling skin products usually list the cannabidiol content in milligrams, sometimes broken down further for each use. This is a good indication they have a legitimate product, although there is no consensus on how much CBD skin should be applied per application. The skin has receptor sites for cannabidiol that when connected may interrupt signals that cause skin to act up.
  3. Ask the brand or check to see if they provide evidence of third-party certification on the purity and stated amount of the CBD to be sure you’re getting what the label claims.
  4. The packaging should be stable–no jars, transparent bottles, or any other components that would expose the delicate plant ingredient to a lot of light or air, which would diminish its effectiveness.
  5. CBD products may be advertised as “isolate”, “full spectrum”, or “broad spectrum”. There is no regulation for these terms, but they can serve as useful distinctions:
  • Isolate CBD is CBD with no other cannabinoids or naturally occurring substances, like flavonoids or terpenes.
  • CBD that is full spectrum contains traces of other cannabinoids, such as CBG (cannabigerol) and antioxidant compounds, along with the CBD.
  • CBD with a broad spectrum means there is no detectable THC. In full spectrum CBD, THC traces can be found, but the concentration must fall below 0.3% for it to be considered inactive.
