Recreational adult-use marijuana was made legal when The Marijuana Regulation & Taxation Act (MRTA) was signed into law on March 31, 2021 by Andrew Cuomo, former Governor of New York. The legislation created a newly established Office of Cannabis Management (OCM) governed by a Cannabis Control Board to comprehensively regulate adult-use, medical, and hemp cannabis. The OCM issues licenses and develops regulations for how businesses can participate in the legalized cannabis industry.
