Ways To Consume Weed Concentrates

Published: July 5, 2023

The cannabis plant contains about 540 chemical substances, including THC and CBD, two of the most widely recognized cannabinoids found in a range of products sold in the U.S. Cannabinoids like THC and CBD are used to treat epilepsy, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, chronic pain, and multiple sclerosis. Cannabinoids like THC concentrates are sought after for pure enjoyment and relaxation.

Cannabis concentrates are not new, but we are seeing a larger variety of different types to choose from. With a wide array of products containing cannabis concentrates, it can be overwhelming to understand which weed concentrates are best for you and your lifestyle. This article will review the types of concentrates, from dabbing, THC wax, pre-rolled joints, and more.

How To Smoke Concentrates

Smoking is the most common and certainly the oldest method of enjoying concentrates. There are many different ways to smoke them, including vaping and dabbing cannabis concentrates. Vaping is an accessible, stealthy, and easier way to smoke than dabbing, which requires a special device specially designed for this method. Vape cartridges and vape pens are affordable and ideal for those wanting to try out concentrates.

Take your dried weed bowl or traditional joint to a whole new level by adding cannabis concentrates to the old-school products we all love. Concentrates can also be included or added to joints, blunts, weed pipes, and in many more ways that spin this old fave into a contemporary treat. Hash (hashish), the oldest known cannabis concentrate, dates back to the 12th century. It is often added to dried flower and rolled into a joint for smoking. Hash can be purchased independently or in a joint called an infused preroll.

Dabbing Cannabis Concentrates

In this method of smoking THC concentrates, shatter is heated on a very hot surface called a ‘nail’ with a dab rig and combined with water for a nice, smooth hit. Dabbing is incredibly potent since shatter is most commonly used, making this method of consuming cannabis concentrates more advanced and not recommended for new or inexperienced users. Plus, a special smoking device called a dab rig is required for this method.

THC Shatter

This potent cannabis concentrate has a smooth, glassy consistency that easily breaks apart – or ‘shatters.’ Shatter is high in THC, coming in at upwards of 80% in cannabis testing and making it one of the most potent cannabis concentrates you can buy. Its THC shatter is usually consumed using flash vaporization from a specialized water pipe called a dab rig.

However, shatter can be fractured into small pieces and placed in a hash pipe, weed bowl, or most smoking devices for cannabis extracts. Shatter’s tightly stacked molecules are bonded for a more secure concentrate ideal for long-term storage.

To make shatter, solvents like CO2 or butane gas are used to strip the cannabis compounds from the plant, then compressed into a highly concentrated form which is then ignited to remove impurities. The extra distillation step makes THC shatter the purest type of concentrate on today’s market.

THC Wax

Wax is frequently called BHO (Butane Hash Oil) wax because the solvent used to extract the oil from the cannabis creates an opaque surface and sticky, crumbly consistency that gives this concentrate its name. This amber-hued cannabis extract has a waxy consistency.

Unlike shatter, which is hard like candy, wax breaks up easily, making it more difficult to measure. Wax also has a shorter shelf life and is less stable and resilient than shatter. Wax is mixed with dry buds in a method called twaxing (mixing dried flower with concentrates) and inhaled through dabbing.

Where To Enjoy THC Cannabis Concentrates

All cannabis concentrates should be purchased from a licensed, reputable dispensary and tried in a safe environment where you feel comfortable.  Regardless of what you’re buying, read the label! Don’t forget that concentrates are higher in THC, so small quantities are ideal for newbies and those just starting out. If it’s been a coon’s age since you partook in any 4:20 rituals, start with the tried and true until you know your tolerance level.
